How to Use the Car Payment Calculator

  1. Enter the vehicle price and any down payment, trade-in value, fees or loan left on your trade-in.
  2. Add your sales tax rate and the APR from your lender's quote.
  3. Choose a loan term (36 to 84 months) and read your estimated monthly payment, total interest and total cost.

How Your Monthly Car Payment Is Calculated

First the loan amount is worked out: vehicle price, minus down payment and trade-in, plus sales tax on the price after trade-in, plus fees and any loan left on your trade-in. Then the standard auto loan formula is applied:

Monthly payment = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ ((1 + r)n − 1)

P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (APR ÷ 12) and n is the number of months. For example, a $30,000 loan at 6.5% APR over 60 months is about $587 per month, with roughly $5,200 paid in interest.

How to Lower Your Monthly Car Payment

  • Make a larger down payment or trade in your current car.
  • Compare APR offers from a bank, a credit union and the dealer before signing.
  • Choose a less expensive trim or model.
  • Extend the term only if needed, since it lowers the payment but raises total interest.

Car Payment Calculator FAQ

How much down payment should I make on a car?

A common rule of thumb is about 20% for a new car and 10% for a used car. A larger down payment lowers your monthly payment and total interest, and reduces the risk of owing more than the car is worth.

Is a 60-month or 72-month car loan better?

A longer term lowers the monthly payment but increases total interest and keeps you in debt longer. Compare both terms in the calculator and look at the Total Interest figure before deciding.

What interest rate (APR) should I enter?

Your APR depends mainly on your credit score, the loan term and whether the car is new or used. Get quotes from your bank, a credit union and the dealer, then enter the real offer you receive.

Does this calculator include insurance, registration and dealer fees?

Partly. Enter title, registration and dealer documentation fees in the Fees field and they are added to the loan. Insurance is not included, and fees vary by state and dealer.

Does sales tax change my monthly car payment?

Yes. When sales tax is financed it increases the loan amount. Tax rules differ by state, and some states do not give a trade-in tax credit, so check your state's rules.
