Walk through any American dealership lot right now and you will trip over a Chevrolet Equinox. The 2026 Chevrolet Equinox sits in the middle of the compact SUV crowd, it costs less than most of its rivals, and in August it landed eighth on the list of vehicles Americans were researching most. Fuel prices are high, buyers want something practical, and the Equinox keeps showing up in that conversation.

So is it actually good, or just everywhere? I went through the specs, the pricing sheets and what owners and reviewers keep repeating about the 2026 Chevy Equinox. This Chevrolet Equinox review covers trim levels, the Chevrolet Equinox 2026 price, real fuel economy, cargo space, safety tech, the problems, and how it stacks up against the Honda CR-V and the Hyundai Tucson. Let’s get into it.

Key Changes in the 2026 Chevy Equinox

The 2026 Equinox is a light update on top of the big redesign Chevrolet introduced for 2025, so do not expect a new face. What you get are small, sensible changes.

Polar White joins the paint list. The base LT now gets the drive mode selector that used to be limited to the RS and ACTIV, which is a nice bit of trickle down. Fuel economy ratings also shifted a little: front wheel drive versions gained about 1 mpg on the highway, while all wheel drive versions picked up about 1 mpg in the city.

Under the hood nothing changes on the Equinox 2026. The same 1.5 liter turbo four returns, and there is still no hybrid. The standard dual screen setup, an 11.3 inch touchscreen and an 11 inch driver display, carries over as well.

About the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox

The Equinox is Chevrolet’s compact crossover, and the current one is the fourth generation. Chevrolet rebuilt it for 2025, and for 2026 it keeps the same bones. It seats five across two rows, measures about 183 inches nose to tail, and rides on a 107.5 inch wheelbase.

Think of it as the sensible middle option. It is not a sporty crossover and it is not a true off roader, though the ACTIV trim leans that way. At its core the Equinox car is a daily driver for commuting, school runs and weekend trips, built to be easy to live with. There are three trims, LT, RS and ACTIV, and all three use the same turbocharged engine. The difference is in styling, wheels and equipment, not power.

What sets the Chevy Equinox 2026 apart in this class is the mix of low entry pricing and a big standard tech package. You get large screens and a full safety suite even on the cheapest version. Where it gives ground is power and cargo space, and I will get to both.

2026 Chevy Equinox Trim Levels and Pricing

There are three trims. Prices below are base MSRPs before the destination charge, which runs about $1,195. All wheel drive adds $2,000 on every trim.

2026 Chevrolet Equinox LT: $28,800 FWD, $30,800 AWD

The Chevrolet Equinox LT is the value leader. You get heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, the full Chevy Safety Assist suite, 17 inch wheels and the two big screens. If you just want the most car for the least money, start here.

2026 Chevrolet Equinox RS: $33,600 FWD, $35,600 AWD

The RS is the style pick. It adds a blacked out grille, 19 inch black wheels, a flat bottom steering wheel and red interior accents. Same engine as the LT, so it looks quicker than it is.

2026 Chevrolet Equinox ACTIV: $33,600 FWD, $35,600 AWD

ACTIV is the rugged one. It rides on dark aluminum wheels wrapped in all terrain tires and gets tougher styling to match. Ground clearance sits around 8 inches, which is fine for gravel roads and snowy driveways, though it is not a Jeep.

Hybrid or Electric: What About the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV?

Not a hybrid. Chevrolet does not offer a gas electric Equinox for 2026, and that matters while fuel prices are high. For electric power there is a separate Chevrolet Equinox EV, and the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV is rated up to 108 MPGe in front wheel drive form. It is a different vehicle with its own price and charging needs, so this review focuses on the gas model. Searches for a next gen Chevrolet Equinox EV are rising, but I have not seen official details, so I will not guess. If you want hybrid mileage in this size of SUV, the CR-V and the Tucson both offer it. I compare them to the Equinox further down.

Performance Review

Every Equinox gets the same engine: a 1.5 liter turbocharged four cylinder making 175 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Chevrolet pairs it with a CVT on front wheel drive models and an eight speed automatic on all wheel drive models.

What is a turbocharged engine? A turbocharger uses exhaust gas to spin a small fan that forces extra air into the engine. More air lets more fuel burn, so a small 1.5 liter engine makes power closer to a bigger one and sips less fuel at cruise.

What is a CVT? CVT stands for continuously variable transmission. Instead of fixed gears it uses a belt and pulleys that slide through endless ratios, keeping the engine efficient. It feels smooth in town but can drone under hard acceleration.

Let me be straight about the acceleration. Reviewers put 0 to 60 mph at around 8.6 seconds for AWD versions, which is slow next to the hybrid rivals. Owners say it feels strained when the car is loaded with people and luggage on a mountain grade.

The ride is the better story. Reviewers call it comfortable, with calm and predictable steering, and it is easy to park.

💡 Real World Benefit: if you mostly drive in town and on the highway, the power is enough. If you tow or climb mountains often, test drive before you commit.

Exterior Design

Rear three-quarter view of a Sterling Gray 2026 Chevrolet Equinox RS featuring slim LED taillights, black emblem, and 19-inch black wheels parked in a suburban neighborhood

Chevrolet gave the 2026 Chevy Equinox a bold face. The big grille and slim, sleek taillights line it up with the larger Tahoe and Silverado, so it no longer looks like the quiet one in the family. At 183.2 inches long and 74.9 inches wide it has a planted, confident stance without being huge.

Trim changes the character a lot. The RS wears 19 inch black wheels and darker accents, which gives it a sporty look from across the parking lot. The ACTIV swaps those for rugged dark wheels with all terrain tires, and it looks ready for a campground. The LT keeps things clean with 17 inch wheels and simple styling.

Polar White is new for 2026, and in my opinion it suits the sharp lines of the RS best.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the story is screens. Every Equinox comes with an 11.3 inch touchscreen and an 11 inch digital driver display, and the system runs Google built in, so navigation and voice commands feel familiar. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported. Higher trims add wireless phone charging, an available Wi-Fi hotspot and extra USB-C ports, and even the LT gets heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

Space is decent, with a few caveats. Front legroom is 40.9 inches and the rear gives you 39.9, fine for adults on normal trips. The rear seat folds 60/40, and that is where cargo space matters.

Behind the rear seats you get 29.8 cubic feet. Fold them flat and it grows to 63.5 cubic feet. Those are respectable numbers, but they trail the Honda and Hyundai, and I will show you the gap in the comparison below.

💡 Real World Benefit: bring your stroller, golf bag or hockey bag to the dealer and load it before you buy. Cargo is the one place the Equinox can surprise you.

Safety Features

Chevrolet fits every Equinox with Chevy Safety Assist, a package of six systems: automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, front pedestrian braking, a following distance indicator, automatic high beams and lane keep assist with lane departure warning. In total the car carries more than 15 standard safety and driver assistance features.

Trim data also lists blind spot alert, rear cross traffic braking, rear park assist and a rear seat reminder as standard. Adaptive cruise control shows up on the LT as well, which is rare at this price.

One honest note on crash tests. When I checked, published crash test results for the 2026 model were not complete. Look up the latest NHTSA and IIHS scores before you sign, because they can change as testing finishes.

2026 Chevy Equinox Problems and How to Handle Them

No car is perfect. These are the complaints that come up most, and none are deal breakers.

Slow acceleration

With 175 horsepower this is the weakest engine of the three rivals I compare below. Test drive it loaded with passengers, and if it still feels lazy, a hybrid rival fits better.

Road noise at highway speeds

Some reviewers find the cabin loud on the freeway. Tires matter here, so test drive on a highway stretch and compare 17 inch and 19 inch setups.

Fuel economy that trails hybrids

At 27 mpg combined it is average for a gas compact. Smoother driving and correct tire pressure help, and my guide on how to improve gas mileage has the full list.

Recalls and software updates

Recalls happen on every model, and one data site logs recall activity on the 2026 Equinox as recently as February 2026. Check your VIN at NHTSA.gov/recalls before buying.

Tips for Buyers

For most people I think the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox LT is the smart buy. It already has the screens, the safety suite and heated seats, and it costs thousands less than the RS or ACTIV. If you live where it snows or you drive on unpaved roads, spend the extra $2,000 for AWD. Choose the RS if styling matters to you, and the ACTIV if your roads are rough.

Who should buy it: commuters, small families and value hunters who want modern tech and a low sticker price. Who should skip it: anyone who wants hybrid fuel economy, brisk acceleration, a bigger cargo area, or a car that tows more than 1,500 pounds. Run your numbers with the Booom Racing car payment calculator before you walk into the dealership.

Benefits of Owning an Equinox

Fuel savings: the EPA estimates about $2,300 a year in fuel for a 27 mpg combined car. That is not hybrid territory, but it is respectable for a gas compact SUV.

Reliability: this is a fairly new generation, so long term data is thin. Chevrolet’s warranty helps, but Toyota and Honda still carry the stronger long term reputation.

Warranty: Chevrolet’s standard coverage is 3 years or 36,000 miles bumper to bumper and 5 years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain. Confirm the terms with your dealer.

Resale: Toyota and Honda usually hold their value better, so factor that into the total cost if you plan to sell in a few years.

Chevrolet Equinox 2026 Price in the USA

The Chevrolet Equinox price starts at $28,800 for the LT with front wheel drive, which makes the Chevrolet Equinox 2026 price the lowest of the three rivals I compare below.

ItemPrice
Base price (LT FWD)$28,800
Top trim (RS or ACTIV AWD)$35,600
Destination chargeAbout $1,195
Range with destination$29,995 to $36,395
Estimated on road range (taxes and fees, my estimate)About $32,000 to $39,500

Real dealer stickers run higher once options get added. Loaded versions I saw listed land in the mid thirties up to roughly $41,000. Prices and incentives change often, so check Chevrolet’s own site for today’s numbers.

2026 Chevrolet Equinox vs Honda CR-V vs Hyundai Tucson

The Equinox lives in a tough neighborhood. Here is how the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox and Honda CR-V compare, along with the Hyundai Tucson, using the numbers from my own reviews. Read my full Honda CR-V review and Hyundai Tucson review for the deep dive.

Prices come from each model’s own review and may include different destination charges, so treat the starting figures as a guide. The pattern is clear. The Equinox wins on price and standard screen size. The CR-V wins on efficiency and space, and the Tucson sits between them with a strong warranty and a similar footprint.

Chevrolet Equinox FAQs

What are the key changes in the 2026 Chevy Equinox?

Very little changed. The 2026 Chevy Equinox carries over the 2025 redesign, adds Polar White paint, gives the LT the drive mode selector, and moves fuel economy ratings by about 1 mpg. The engine and the standard screens stay the same.

What are the cons of a 2026 Chevy Equinox?

The main cons are slow acceleration with only 175 horsepower, no hybrid version, less cargo space than the CR-V and Tucson, and some highway road noise reported by reviewers.

What is the most common problem with Equinox models?

For the current generation, the complaints that come up most are slow acceleration and cabin noise at highway speeds. Because this generation arrived for 2025, long term reliability records are limited, so check recalls by VIN at NHTSA.gov before you buy.

Which 2026 Equinox trim is best?

For most buyers the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox LT is the best value, since it already includes the big screens, heated seats and the full safety suite. Pick the RS for sporty looks or the ACTIV for rougher roads, and add AWD if you drive in snow.

What is the Equinox’s fuel economy?

The EPA rates front wheel drive models at 26 city, 29 highway and 27 combined mpg. All wheel drive models get 25 city, 29 highway and 26 combined. You can see how to squeeze out more in my gas mileage guide.

How much does it cost to maintain an Equinox in the USA?

Routine service like oil changes, tire rotations and filters usually costs a few hundred dollars a year early on, and the warranty covers major defects. Prices vary by region and shop, so ask a local dealer for a quote.

Does the Equinox have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?

Yes. Both work wirelessly through the standard 11.3 inch touchscreen, and the system also runs Google built in for navigation and voice commands.

Does the Equinox come with AWD?

All wheel drive is optional on every trim, LT, RS and ACTIV, and it adds about $2,000 over the front wheel drive price. AWD models can tow up to 1,500 pounds, and front wheel drive versions are rated lower, so check the owner’s manual before towing.

Is the Equinox good value compared to the CR-V and Tucson?

It is the cheapest of the three and packs a lot of standard tech, but it has less power and less cargo space. Read my Honda CR-V review and Hyundai Tucson review to compare.

Does a CVT have gears?

Not the fixed gears of a regular automatic. A CVT keeps a small gearset for forward and reverse, but the forward ratios come from a belt and two pulleys that change size as you drive. That is why it feels smooth with no shift jolts.

Does the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox have a CVT?

Front wheel drive models do. All wheel drive models use an 8 speed automatic with real gears, according to spec listings. The CVT is smooth in town but can sound droning under hard acceleration.

Is there a hybrid or electric Equinox?

The 2026 Chevrolet Equinox gas model has no hybrid version. Chevrolet sells a separate Equinox EV for buyers who want an electric option, rated up to 108 MPGe in front wheel drive form.

Booomracing Verdict: Is the 2026 Chevy Equinox Worth Buying?

In my opinion, and in most 2026 Chevy Equinox reviews I read, the Equinox is a smart pick for buyers who put price and technology ahead of power and cargo space. For under $30,000 with destination, you get two big screens, a full safety suite and an easy, comfortable ride. That is hard to beat.

I would recommend it to commuters, first time SUV buyers and small families who want a lot of car for the money. If you care most about fuel savings or cargo room, the CR-V is the better tool. The Equinox is the budget friendly all rounder.

Now I want to hear from you: would you take the cheaper Equinox, or pay more for a hybrid like the CR-V? Tell me in the comments.
